How to Use a Baby Name Generator to Build a Shortlist
A baby name generator can give you a starting point when you have preferences but no clear shortlist. The BumpNames name generator searches names already in our database. It shows an initial set of ten suggestions, then lets you change the filters and request another set. It does not invent a name, create an etymology, or know which choice will suit your child.
Start with the preference that matters most
Choose All names, Boy names, or Girl names. Add an origin if you want to explore a recorded cultural connection. Choose a length if the sound of a short or long first name matters with your surname. Short means up to four characters, medium means five or six, and long means seven or more.
Begin with one or two filters. Selecting a narrow origin, a short length, and a restricted popularity group together may leave few suggestions. An empty result means that this particular search found no matching records. Broaden a setting before deciding that there are no suitable names in that tradition.
Understand the name groups
The US top 100 group uses the 2025 Social Security Administration rankings. Outside the US top 500 includes lower-ranked names and names without a rank in that group. Nature meanings searches words in the meaning field; a match may be a broad association rather than a literal translation.
Open a suggestion to read the details available for that name. Recorded meanings and origins are being reviewed, and origins may describe several traditions. If a cultural or religious connection is central to your choice, check it with a source familiar with that language or community.
Save ideas before generating another set
Use Save name on a suggestion you want to keep. Your saved names appear underneath the results, and you can remove a name there or copy the whole list. The shortlist stays in this browser on this device. It is separate from an account and does not automatically appear on your partner's phone.
Use Share to send an individual name link, or copy your saved names into a message you can both revisit. Copying the list elsewhere also gives you a record if you clear browser storage, change devices, or use a private browsing session.
Turn suggestions into a considered choice
Say each favorite with the full surname. Write its initials and any middle names. Ask which spelling and pronunciation each parent expects, and consider nicknames without assuming that other people will always use your preferred version.
Keep a few possibilities for a later conversation. If you want to compare choices through a shared game, create an account and invite your partner. For the source behind the current public popularity groups, read the official US rankings and the SSA baby names page.
